Opportunity Summary 

Congressional District Office Interns support the daily operations of Congressman Lou Correa’s district office while gaining firsthand experience in public service and constituent relations. Interns assist staff with administrative tasks, community outreach, casework support, event preparation, and constituent correspondence.

Key Responsibilities:

Answer and direct constituent phone calls and inquiries.

Assist with administrative and clerical duties, including data entry and filing.

Support casework and community outreach projects.

Attend and assist with community events, meetings, and district programs.

Conduct research on local, state, and federal issues as assigned.

Draft correspondence, reports, and outreach materials.

Help maintain office records and constituent databases.

Provide general support to district office staff as needed.

Tasks:

Interns will perform professional and pre-professional duties that provide meaningful exposure to congressional operations and public service while developing transferable workplace skills. Duties may include:

Conducting research on federal, state, and local issues, programs, and resources relevant to constituent concerns.
Assisting with constituent services by reviewing inquiries, gathering information, preparing case summaries, and supporting casework activities under staff supervision.
Drafting professional correspondence, constituent response letters, briefing materials, reports, and outreach communications.
Assisting with the planning, coordination, and execution of community outreach events, town halls, and stakeholder meetings.
Maintaining and updating constituent records, databases, and case management systems.
Preparing meeting materials, agendas, informational packets, and presentation documents.
Monitoring community concerns, identifying constituent resource needs, and compiling relevant information for staff review.
Attending meetings, public events, and community engagements and preparing written summaries or reports.
Analyzing constituent trends and assisting with the development of outreach strategies and community resource guides.
Collaborating with district staff on special projects related to constituent engagement, public policy, and community partnerships.
Providing professional administrative support related to casework, outreach, and district operations.

More than 80% of assigned duties involve professional or pre-professional work requiring critical thinking, research, written communication, analysis, problem-solving, public engagement, and application of governmental and public administration principles. These responsibilities are designed to support the achievement of academic learning outcomes and provide substantive experiential learning opportunities.

Training:

Students will receive structured training designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of congressional district office operations, constituent services, and public administration. Training will begin with a mandatory office orientation covering workplace expectations, professional conduct, confidentiality requirements, office procedures, constituent interaction protocols, and the role of a congressional district office.

Throughout the internship, students will participate in:

Weekly one-on-one meetings with a supervisor to review assignments, receive feedback, and discuss professional development goals.
Training on constituent services, casework procedures, and federal agency referral processes.
Job shadowing opportunities with district staff to observe community outreach, constituent meetings, and casework management.
Instruction on professional communication, including phone etiquette, correspondence drafting, and constituent engagement.
Training on office software, constituent management databases, and document management systems.
Research and policy analysis training related to federal, state, and local issues affecting constituents.
Participation in staff meetings, community events, and outreach activities to gain practical exposure to public service operations.
Review of sample casework files, correspondence templates, outreach materials, and legislative resources to contextualize assigned tasks.
Ongoing mentorship and performance evaluations to assess progress toward learning objectives and professional skill development.

This training is designed to develop competencies in public service, professional communication, research, problem-solving, constituent relations, and government operations.

Learning Outcome:

The District Office of Congressman Lou Correa represents California's 46th Congressional District and works to support constituents through federal casework assistance, community engagement, advocacy, and connections to federal programs and services.
