Human Services Intern – Behavioral Support & Youth Development

The Human Services Intern supports the social, emotional, and behavioral development of TK–8th grade youth participating in Camp Savio programs. Working under the supervision of the Camp Director and program staff, the intern assists with behavior management, student support, inclusion practices, leadership development, and social-emotional learning activities. This position provides hands-on experience working with children, including students with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental or behavioral needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provide behavioral support and guidance to youth through positive reinforcement, conflict resolution, emotional regulation, and de-escalation strategies.
• Support students with autism and other special needs during camp activities, transitions, and peer interactions to promote inclusion and participation.
• Observe student behaviors and collaborate with camp staff to identify needs and implement appropriate interventions and support plans.
• Facilitate and support social-emotional learning activities, leadership development opportunities, and peer mentoring programs.
• Develop educational materials and resources that promote awareness, understanding, and inclusion of neurodiverse youth.
• Maintain accurate documentation of observations, interventions, and student progress while ensuring confidentiality.
• Participate in supervision meetings, staff trainings, and program planning discussions.
• Serve as a positive role model while supporting Camp Savio's mission of youth development and leadership.

Qualifications

• Current enrollment in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, Child Development, Education, or a related field.
• Interest in working with children and adolescents in a youth development setting.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff, families, and community members.
• Experience working with youth is preferred but not required.

Task:

The student will provide behavioral support to TK–8th grade youth by implementing behavior management strategies, conflict resolution techniques, and positive reinforcement practices. The student will work directly with children, including those with autism and other developmental needs, to promote inclusion, social-emotional growth, and successful participation in camp activities.

The student will observe and assess student behaviors, collaborate with supervisors and staff to develop appropriate support strategies, and participate in case discussions regarding youth needs and interventions. The student will facilitate social-emotional learning and leadership development activities that support positive youth development.

Additional duties include documenting observations and interventions, maintaining confidential records, assisting with the development of educational resources related to autism awareness and inclusion, participating in staff meetings and supervision sessions, and evaluating the effectiveness of support strategies through ongoing observation and reflection.

Training:

expectations. Training will include job shadowing staff, hands on experience working with youth, and weekly supervision meetings with the Camp Director. The student will receive ongoing coaching in behavior support, conflict resolution, autism awareness, professional documentation, and positive youth development practices. Additional learning opportunities will include staff meetings, training materials, and regular feedback to support professional growth.
