Health & Wellness Marketing Psychology InternAt — Dexafit Los Alamitos
DexaFit Los Alamitos and Nawra Wellness Studio are co-located precision wellness businesses offering DEXA body composition scanning, ExoFreeze cryotherapy, ExoPod infrared therapy, and metabolic testing (RMR, VO\u2082 Max). Both entities are owned and operated by Fouzia Usman, a certified High Performance Coach, NLP Practitioner, and TEDx speaker.
This internship is rooted at the intersection of psychology and health marketing. Effective wellness marketing is fundamentally an exercise in applied psychology — understanding what motivates health behavior, how people perceive and respond to biometric data, what messaging drives engagement, and how to build trust with a health-conscious audience. The intern will work directly with the founder to support and learn from the content strategy, brand messaging, and audience communication responsibilities she currently carries as owner-operator.
This position is particularly well-suited for students majoring in Psychology, Health Psychology, Communications, or Behavioral Science, and offers a direct bridge between academic psychology and professional health marketing practice.
Tasks:
Note: All tasks below reflect responsibilities currently performed by the owner/operator of DexaFit Los Alamitos and Nawra Wellness Studio. This internship supports and extends existing work; it does not displace or replace any paid staff member.
- Research and analyze the psychology of wellness consumer behavior, including what motivates health-seeking actions, trust in health brands, and response to biometric data — and apply findings to content development
- Draft social media content (Instagram, Facebook) using audience psychology principles, including motivational framing, social proof, and identity-based messaging aligned with Nawra's brand voice
- Assist in developing email campaign content with attention to persuasive communication, behavior change language, and audience segmentation psychology
- Research and write blog or web content on health psychology topics — including the mind-body connection, behavior change, metabolic health, and the psychological dimensions of body composition
- Assist in creating client-facing educational materials that translate clinical wellness data into psychologically accessible, motivating narratives
- Analyze engagement patterns across digital channels and prepare brief reports connecting audience response to psychological messaging principles
- Support content planning by researching competitor messaging, audience trends, and health communication best practices
- Assist in developing brand storytelling content that authentically connects Nawra's service offerings to client psychological well-being and transformation
- Culminating Project: Develop a comprehensive content strategy guide for a precision wellness brand, grounded in consumer psychology and health behavior research, covering audience personas, messaging frameworks, and channel-specific content principles
- Assist with light administrative tasks as needed, including scheduling support and file organization (less than 20% of total duties)
Training:
The intern will receive:
- Day 1 Site Orientation covering studio safety procedures, emergency protocols, client privacy and confidentiality standards (HIPAA-aware practices), brand guidelines, and content standards
- Shadowing sessions with the founder during client consultations and content planning discussions to develop firsthand understanding of how psychology informs client communication
- Assigned readings on health communication, consumer psychology, and behavior change marketing — discussed in weekly meetings
- Weekly 1:1 mentorship sessions with the founder/supervisor covering content review, audience strategy, professional development, and reflective practice
- Ongoing feedback on all content deliverables with explicit connection to psychological frameworks covered in coursework
- Mid-internship progress review (Week 6) to assess learning outcomes and refine focus
- Final evaluation and debrief (Week 12) with written supervisor feedback provided to the student
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
- Apply consumer psychology and health behavior theories to the development of real-world wellness marketing content
- Analyze how psychological principles — including motivation, self-efficacy, social proof, and identity — are used to craft effective health messaging for diverse audiences
- Demonstrate understanding of how biometric data and health outcomes are communicated to drive client engagement and behavior change
- Develop and evaluate digital content (social media, email, web) using audience psychology frameworks to assess impact and engagement
- Apply persuasive communication principles to create messaging that is both compelling and ethically grounded in a health context
- Conduct research on audience psychology and wellness consumer behavior to inform content strategy decisions
- Produce a substantive culminating project — a comprehensive content strategy guide for a wellness brand — integrating academic psychology with applied marketing practice
Workplace Safety Note:
This is a remote position. The intern will work from home and is not required to be on-site. Upon starting, the intern will be invited to an optional in-person studio tour at DexaFit Los Alamitos / Nawra Wellness Studio to familiarize themselves with the services, environment, and client experience that their content work will represent. No equipment operation or direct client interaction is required or expected as part of this role.
