Opportunity Summary 

The Counseling Front Desk Intern will gain hands-on experience in the scheduling and quick advising of new, continuing, and returning El Camino College students, as well as assisting staff and faculty with requests as assigned. This internship is designed for college students pursuing degrees in psychology, school counseling, and could also assist college students with gaining experience for masters programs.

Tasks:

Key Responsibilities

• In order to properly students to the best of their ability, the Front Desk staff member will conduct an intake process; New/Continuing/Returning student; Level of probation; Fin Aid – SAP, LIL, SSP counseling, etc.

• Assist in the scheduling of academic counseling appointments for students. Assist students in signing up for quick counseling services, and checking in for previously scheduled appointments.

• Assist with answering phones, making flyers for events, setting up/take down for counseling related events.
• Support program implementation and assist with basic program design under supervision
- Provide class enrollment assistance as needed
- Access ECC Connect scheduling, degree planner filter and student record overview page to verify information for scheduling

Training:

Exposure to the El Camino student body and campus culture environment. Training on customer service techniques, staff, team, and customer interpersonal skills, computer systems for student data management. ECC Connect/Starfish/EAB; Microsoft products (Outlook, Teams); Google Workspace access and use of various products.

Mentorship and Supervision: Intern will shadow peers and supervisors for guidance, feedback, and professional growth. Monthly and bi-monthly staff check-ins.

Regular Check-Ins: Monthly and  Bi-weekly staff meetings to assess progress, address challenges, and adjust training as needed.

Learning Outcome:

- Successfully conduct intake of students coming to the Counseling office who need assistance with academic counseling services, and/or determine the purpose of visit, and directs visitors to appropriate offices and services.
- Gain basic knowledge of El Camino's student services and be able to guide students to the correct service, or with the assistance of the supervisor.
- Refine customer service skills, as well as gain empathy and diversity/equity training to assist students from all walks of life, meeting the student where they are at.
