LUNA College InternAt — Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA)

Summary

Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator(s), the College Intern will serve as a collaborative, student-centered team member supporting OCAPICA’s Youth Suicide Prevention Program, LUNA, through session and event facilitation, mentorship, student engagement, and program support. The intern must have the ability to build and maintain positive relationships with students, fellow interns, OCAPICA staff, and AUHSD faculty. They also must have the ability to work with diverse ethnic and cultural communities, including, but not limited to the following target populations: students of color, specifically Latino youth, LGBTQIA+, and/or undocumented immigrants of varying ages between 12 to 18. This is a position where student hours and workload are considered and accommodated. 

Essential Functions (Include, But Not Limited To)

1. Attend and facilitate weekly in-person after-school LUNA Leader sessions for ONE of the following cohorts (please note that school sites are rotated every Monday):
1. Cohort #1 (Ana/Mag): Anaheim & Magnolia High Schools (Mondays: 3 PM - 6 PM) 
2. Cohort #2 (Sav/Dale): Savanna High School (Mondays: 3 PM - 6 PM) & Dale Junior High School (Mondays: 2 PM - 5 PM) 

2. Attend and facilitate supplemental sessions and events of various dates/days, times and locations (within or near Anaheim, CA) 
3. Assist with recruiting participants for workshops, activities, etc. 
4. Provide individualized and group mentorship to high school students (e.g., advise students’ workshop project groups) 
5. Attend LUNA Team meetings, primarily held virtually, with occasional in-person meetings in Garden Grove, CA
6. Help manage communication channels (e.g., Discord)
7. Track student attendance tracking and assignment completion 
8. Complete other projects as assigned to meet program, department, and agency missions, goals, and objectives

Minimum Qualifications - Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

1. Spanish proficiency preferred (written and verbal)
2. Regular attendance required 
3. Reliable transportation for sessions/workshops and events in Anaheim and occasional meetings in Garden Grove
4. Reliable internet access for virtual meetings
5. Live scan/background check required
6. Proficiency with Google Drive and Canva preferred
7. Strong organizational, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills with the ability to meet deadlines and pay attention to details
8. Experience working with diverse teams and communities, including youth ages 12-18 
9. Must be comfortable with the philosophy and goals of OCAPICA and LUNA

Learning Outcomes:

- Facilitate and plan youth workshops and events
- Train and lead high school youth leaders

- Learn the structure of a nonprofit organization and how it operates
- Increase their interpersonal skills working with high school youth
