The Instructional Aide role with the Art + Nature Day Camp offers an intensive, high-impact fieldwork experience perfect for fulfilling graduate school internship requirements. Aides serve as the primary caregiver and group manager for TK-6th grade students, directly applying advanced pedagogical and social-emotional learning principles. Key responsibilities include utilizing restorative justice for conflict resolution, implementing standards-aligned, inquiry and place-based curriculum integrating art and environmental education, and supporting diverse student needs through Universal Design for Learning (UDL) frameworks. Interns receive mandated professional development and training in critical areas such as Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Trauma-Informed Teaching, Arts Integration, Cultural Competency, and Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI). This comprehensive professional training and supervised experience in behavioral health support, curriculum delivery, and inclusive educational practices provide direct, valuable fieldwork hours and professional readiness for post-graduate careers.
By the end of this opportunity, the graduate student will have gained significant professional experience and competencies, specifically: Applied Educational Pedagogy: Gained hands-on experience implementing standards-aligned, inquiry and place-based curriculum for TK-6th students, specifically integrating Arts Integration and environmental education. Behavioral & Inclusive Support: Developed and applied real-world skills in student support and conflict resolution using restorative justice principles. This is reinforced by extensive training in Social Emotional Learning (SEL), Trauma-Informed Teaching, and Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI). Equitable Practice: Practiced creating an accessible learning environment by utilizing the Universal Design for Learning (UDL) framework and building skills in Cultural Competency. Fieldwork Completion: Successfully completed 120 hours of supervised, high-impact fieldwork, fulfilling university credit requirements while managing daily camp operations and safety procedures.
To ensure all staff and interns are fully prepared, the Mariposa Arts Council provides mandatory training and professional development focused on key pedagogical and safety practices. The provided trainings cover: Social Emotional Learning (SEL), for implementing SEL outcomes; Trauma-Informed Teaching, to utilize approaches that address the impact of trauma; Universal Design for Learning (UDL), to make learning accessible to all students; Arts Integration, to connect art forms with other subject areas; Cultural Competency, to create a culturally responsive environment; and Crisis Prevention & Intervention (CPI), for managing and de-escalating crisis situations. Staff receive 15 hours of paid time to attend training workshops, which include sessions on Day Camp Safety Procedures, Student Support Systems, Emergency Protocols (like a Code Orange drill), and program logistics such as the campus orientation and using Procare family communication app.
