Califoirina State Senate

If the placement is with the California State Senate, an intern would typically gain firsthand experience with the legislative process and the day-to-day operations of a Senate office. Responsibilities may include: Conducting policy and legal research on legislation, state programs, and emerging issues. Attending committee hearings, floor sessions, briefings, and stakeholder meetings, and preparing summaries for staff. Assisting with constituent services by responding to inquiries, drafting correspondence, and helping resolve issues involving state agencies. Tracking legislation and monitoring bills as they move through the legislative process. Drafting memos, talking points, fact sheets, newsletters, and other communications materials. Assisting with event planning, community outreach, and district engagement activities. Supporting staff with administrative projects, scheduling, and office operations. Learning how the state budget process, committee system, and legislative negotiations shape public policy. Interns are often exposed to a wide range of policy areas—including education, healthcare, housing, public safety, environmental policy, civil rights, and economic development—and have the opportunity to observe how elected officials, advocates, constituents, and government agencies work together to address issues facing California.
