Central Valley Gender Health and Wellness

Organization Description

Central Valley Gender Health & Wellness (CVGHW) is a community-based nonprofit organization located in Stockton, California, serving the broader Central Valley. The organization provides culturally responsive, trauma-informed services focused on improving health outcomes for underserved populations, including transgender and gender-diverse individuals, people experiencing substance use disorders, and communities disproportionately impacted by HIV and systemic health inequities. CVGHW offers a comprehensive continuum of care that includes HIV prevention and testing, PrEP/PEP navigation, overdose prevention and response services, peer support, community health worker (CHW) services, youth development programming, and linkage to medical, behavioral health, and social services. Services are delivered through a combination of drop-in center support, mobile outreach (“Wellness on Wheels”), and community-based engagement across high-need areas. The organization integrates public health, behavioral health, and community-based care models to address complex social determinants of health. CVGHW is committed to advancing health equity, reducing disparities, and building sustainable pathways to care through partnerships with local providers, public agencies, and community stakeholders.

Program Information

Students placed at Central Valley Gender Health & Wellness (CVGHW) will engage in a structured, hands-on learning experience across multiple program areas, including community outreach, client engagement, and service coordination. Under supervision, students will support culturally responsive services for underserved populations, including transgender and gender-diverse individuals, people experiencing substance use disorders, and communities impacted by HIV. Student activities may include conducting outreach and engagement in community settings, assisting with health education and prevention services, supporting intake and screening processes (including mental health and substance use screenings), and providing linkage and referral to medical, behavioral health, and social services. Students may also participate in peer support programming, youth development activities, and community-based workshops or group sessions. In addition, students will gain experience in case documentation, data tracking, and program evaluation aligned with public health and behavioral health frameworks. Opportunities to observe and collaborate with clinical staff, including licensed professionals, will be available to support integration of theory and practice. Students will receive regular supervision, participate in team meetings, and engage in reflective practice to support professional development, ethical practice, and skill-building in real-world service delivery environments.

Health & Safety

Students placed at Central Valley Gender Health & Wellness (CVGHW) may engage in community-based and field-based activities, including outreach in public spaces, encampments, and community settings where individuals experiencing homelessness or substance use may be present. As such, students may encounter environmental conditions (e.g., weather exposure), proximity to active substance use, and individuals in varying states of behavioral or mental health distress. All students receive orientation and training on safety protocols, including situational awareness, de-escalation techniques, professional boundaries, and trauma-informed engagement. Students are not permitted to engage in high-risk situations independently and are supervised by trained staff during outreach and service delivery. Additional considerations include potential exposure to biohazards (e.g., used syringes or bodily fluids). Students are trained in universal precautions and are not required to handle sharps or hazardous materials unless properly trained and authorized. Personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and sanitation supplies, is provided. For center-based activities, the organization maintains a structured and monitored environment with established protocols for client interactions and incident response. Students have access to staff support at all times and are encouraged to report any safety concerns immediately. CVGHW prioritizes the physical and emotional safety of students and provides ongoing supervision, support, and clear guidelines to ensure a safe and educational training environment.
