Latin Heritage MonthAt — LAUSD, Palms Elementary school
Community Fellows will support the planning, organization, and implementation of the school's Latin Heritage Month Festival. Responsibilities may include engaging community members, recruiting and coordinating community partners, volunteers, and family participants, and assisting with outreach efforts to increase event participation. Fellows will collaborate with students, teachers, families, and community organizations to support festival activities and student-led projects. They will assist with event logistics, including creating promotional materials, distributing flyers, sending emails, making phone calls, tracking participation, and helping coordinate event-day operations. Through this experience, Fellows will gain hands-on experience in community engagement, event planning, partnership development, family outreach, and stakeholder collaboration while contributing to a school-wide celebration of culture and community.
By the end of this experience, students will have gained practical experience in community engagement, event planning, stakeholder collaboration, outreach, and partnership development. They will strengthen their communication, leadership, organization, and project management skills while working with students, families, school staff, and community partners. Students will also develop a deeper understanding of how schools and communities collaborate to create meaningful opportunities that support student learning, cultural awareness, and family engagement.
Students will receive training and ongoing guidance on the Community Schools strategy, family and community engagement practices, stakeholder collaboration, and event planning. Students will participate as members of the Community School Implementation Team (CSIT), where they will learn about collaborative leadership, needs assessment, community partnerships, and school improvement planning. They will also receive coaching and support related to communication, outreach, project management, and professional workplace expectations.
All activities will be conducted in accordance with LAUSD policies, procedures, and safety requirements. Students will receive appropriate site orientation and will be supervised by school staff while participating in school activities, meetings, and events. All interactions with students, families, staff, and community members will follow LAUSD guidelines related to safety, professionalism, and confidentiality.
