MOCA hosts a position for a CSUN student enrolled in the community engagement course, Art 489CS: Art Education in Schools, Museums and Community Organizations. This job entails shadowing the Associate Director, Education Strategy and Planning in their work overseeing MOCA's flagship school and teacher program, Contemporary Art Start (moca.org/cas), and the museum's family programs. This person will learn how a museum connects with the education community through it's extensive offerings for teachers, students, and families. They will participate in professional development workshops for educators, observe and evaluate student tours, family events, and the museum's family engagement space alongside MOCA staff members.
Students will have learned how a museum education department functions by supporting its community outreach and in-museum programs for students, teachers and families. They will have participated in specific, proven strategies like teaching methods used to reach diverse audiences and contribute to the art education landscape of Los Angeles. They will have worked alongside teacher participants in professional development trainings, observed student tours and assisted with ongoing evaluation of them, assisted at a family event, and evaluated the museum's family activity space. They will complete a project of their own design that represents key lessons and strategies learned while at MOCA.
Candidates will work closely in an ongoing manner with senior staff to learn about the history and current functions of the museum's core education programs. They will attend professional development events for teachers to better understand how programming works and to be exposed to the specific teaching strategies used at the museum. They will accompany and learn basics from MOCA educators during student tours, planning meetings, and debrief sessions.
