Opportunity Summary 

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, from 2:35-4:35pm, Service learning students will be helping identified children in grades 2-4 with their reading using a highly successful reading tutoring program called Reading Pals.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Reading Pals learn to communicate effectively with students in grades 2nd through 5th to help them build their literacy and language skills. Reading Pals will learn to develop positive rapport with children to build meaningful relationships and show each child they are valued, seen, and heard. Reading Pals will learn to build trust with children so they can be vulnerable by reading with their Reading Pal and persevering when reading feels difficult.

Opportunity Training 

Reading Pals must attend mandatory training prior to volunteering. The training is one hour and will be offered in person on various dates. Please check back for upcoming training dates and locations

2026-2027 SERVICE LEARNING CHECKLIST

If you are interested, please complete the following steps:
 

  1. Complete the Google Form

  2. Provide a copy of your Driver’s License or CA ID (with Photo)

  3. Current TB Results: Download and complete the TB Risk Assessment if needed.

  4. Complete the Vista Unified Volunteer Application and attach it to the Google form

  5. Complete the Vista Unified Code of Conduct Form and attach it to the Google form

  6. Complete Ministry Safe training (e-mailed to you by Susan Bentley)

  7. Complete Orientation with Assigned Site

  8. Start your service learning/internship. Keep track of your hours on the form/log provided by your professor: record date and type of service. Have your site supervisor or Susan Bentley sign your log at the end of your service learning/internship.

  9. BE SURE TO NOTIFY YOUR assigned teacher/counselor/school leader AND Susan Bentley in advance if you cannot serve on a particular day.
