Opportunity Summary 

This internship provides college students with a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience working alongside the athletic trainer at Great Oak High School. Interns will be exposed to the day-to-day responsibilities of athletic training while working directly with student-athletes in a high school setting. Under the guidance and supervision of the athletic trainer, interns will have opportunities to observe and assist with injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, taping and bracing, and game and practice coverage. This experience will allow students to apply concepts learned in the classroom to real-world clinical situations while developing their communication, clinical, and professional skills. This internship is ideal for college students pursuing athletic training, sports medicine, kinesiology, exercise science, physical therapy, or a related field who are interested in gaining practical experience and learning more about a career in sports medicine.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students may develop practical knowledge and skills in athletic training and sports medicine, including injury prevention, injury evaluation, first aid, taping and bracing, rehabilitation techniques, and therapeutic interventions. They will also gain hands-on experience working with student-athletes, learn proper documentation and professional communication, and develop an understanding of the role and responsibilities of an athletic trainer in a high school setting. The opportunity will allow students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world clinical situations while building confidence, professionalism, teamwork, and clinical decision-making skills.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive direct training and supervision from the athletic trainer at Great Oak High School. Training will include an orientation to the athletic training facility, safety procedures, confidentiality expectations, and proper professional conduct. Students will be taught and supervised in basic clinical skills such as injury prevention, taping and bracing, first aid, injury evaluation, rehabilitation exercises, and treatment techniques. Instruction will begin with observation and demonstration, followed by hands-on practice under supervision. Students will receive ongoing feedback and guidance to ensure they perform responsibilities safely and appropriately within their level of experience.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Student will be required to lift heavy objects 40 lbs or more. Students will be exposed to blood and bodily fluids.
