Community Impact & Nonprofit Services Student PlacementAt — Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee on Anti Poverty (MAAC)
MAAC offers service-learning and internship opportunities for students interested in community development, education, economic mobility, housing, health and well-being, advocacy, and nonprofit administration. Students will gain hands-on experience working alongside professionals across one or more of MAAC's service areas while supporting programs designed to empower individuals and families throughout San Diego County. Depending on placement, students may assist with program operations, client engagement, outreach activities, administrative projects, workshops, community initiatives, research, and other organizational needs. Students will receive orientation, training, supervision, and ongoing support while developing professional skills and a deeper understanding of community-based services and nonprofit operations.
Students will gain practical experience in nonprofit and community-based services, strengthen professional communication and collaboration skills, and develop a deeper understanding of how organizations address social and economic barriers through education, housing, health and well-being, economic development, and advocacy. Students will learn about client-centered service delivery, professional ethics, confidentiality, community engagement, and the role of cross-sector partnerships in advancing economic mobility and self-sufficiency.
Students will receive a site orientation that includes an introduction to MAAC's mission, programs, operations, workplace expectations, confidentiality requirements, safety procedures, emergency protocols, and role-specific responsibilities. Additional training will be provided based on the student's assigned department, project, and service area.
Students are required to comply with MAAC policies and procedures related to workplace safety, professional conduct, confidentiality, data security, and client privacy. Depending on the placement, students may be required to complete background screening, fingerprinting, tuberculosis testing, or other program-specific requirements. Students who interact with clients, families, or sensitive information must maintain strict confidentiality and follow all applicable federal, state, and organizational requirements.
Interested students may be asked to submit a resume and participate in an interview to help determine the best placement based on their academic interests, skills, and career goals. Placements are available across multiple MAAC programs and departments. Selected students must complete all required onboarding documentation, orientation activities, and any applicable screening requirements before beginning their placement. MAAC welcomes students interested in community impact, public service, nonprofit leadership, education, child development, economic mobility, housing, health and well-being, communications, and organizational development.
