Tasks:
Assist with developing and delivering health education materials, presentations, and outreach activities focused on health promotion and disease prevention.
Conduct community outreach and engage with participants to provide accurate, accessible health information and connect individuals with appropriate community resources.
Assist with preparing educational materials, flyers, handouts, and other resources for health education programs.
Support health education workshops, health fairs, screenings, and community events such as hikes including participant education and program logistics.
Research health topics and community health resources to support the development and improvement of educational programming.
Observe and assist experienced health educators with individual and group education sessions to develop professional communication and teaching skills.
Collect and organize program participation, outreach, and evaluation data while maintaining confidentiality and following organizational procedures.
Assist with evaluating the effectiveness of health education activities through participant feedback, surveys, or other assessment methods.
Participate in team meetings and contribute ideas related to community health needs, outreach strategies, and program improvement.
Maintain professional documentation of assigned activities, completed projects, outreach efforts, and learning experiences for review with the placement mentor.
Apply knowledge of health promotion, disease prevention, cultural awareness, and professional ethics to assigned projects and interactions with community members.
Meet regularly with the supervisor/mentor to review performance, receive feedback, discuss challenges, and identify opportunities for continued professional development.
Training:
Students will receive an initial general orientation covering organizational policies, expectations, confidentiality, safety procedures, and the role of a health educator volunteer. They will receive an overview of the placement, assigned responsibilities, and the communities served. Students will participate in job shadowing and hands-on training to observe effective health education and outreach practices. Weekly one-on-one meetings with a mentor will provide guidance, feedback, and opportunities to discuss progress and challenges. Students will also receive relevant training materials, work samples, and literature related to health promotion and disease prevention. Assigned tasks will be explained and contextualized so students understand their purpose and connection to community health outcomes. As appropriate, students will participate in workshops or skills training and complete practice activities, reviews, and assessments to reinforce learning.
