Criminal Justice InternAt — Los Angeles County Probation Department

To provide an opportunity for students to earn academic credit toward a degree; to offer students multidisciplinary opportunities for practical study and research; and to broaden students understanding of Civil Service and the role that local government plays in the community.

Tasks:

The intern will shadow Probation Officer/Supervisor in all areas of their assignment
Intern may assist with making telephone calls to clients and community-based programs and document in appropriate probation systems (they must be trained and approved by a deputy on all notations made)
Interns may assist clients with making referrals to court ordered programs
Interns may assist in obtaining records, police reports, progress reports from programs.
Interns may notify victims of scheduled court hearings by telephone; Assist in putting together restitution packets
Interns may assist with creating data base driven spreadsheets to capture compliance and upcoming deadlines
Interns may assist with updating statistical reports
Interns may conduct case assessments
Interns may compile and organize case files and records
Interns may assist with client interviews and intake procedures as to the probation expectations and conditions of probation and document accordingly
Interns may observe court proceedings
Interns may assist in developing rehabilitation plans and monitor compliance with court orders

Training:

Community Relations Internship Coordinator schedules the intern to participate in a mandatory Orientation/Training titled PROBATION DEPARTMENT COLLEGEINTERNSHIP PROGRAM TRAINING Orientation. Once intern is assigned to the site, the intern meets with the supervisor, where expectation are discussed. Supervisor will follow up with intern on the weekly basis. Intern will shadow Probation Officers/Supervisors; and will provided projects/tasks to complete.

Learning Outcome:

The internship period is an excellent opportunity to see if there’s a good fit between the intern’s skills and abilities and Probation Department's needs. The intern learns how Probation Department operates, and can get a sense of their potential without committing to a job.
Interns are tasked with a projects and help Probation employees at the area office. They can assist with Probation Officers with Probationer's appointments, data entry into criminal justice system, visit court hearings and get familiar with court proceedings; get familiar with court reports; police reports; arrests. Interns get familiar with departments vision and mission. They work closely with Probation Officer to learn the job duties and responsibilities.

Interns will be working out of Pasadena Courthouse where Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is present and will be always with Probation Officer, if in presence of a client. AB109 adult clients have extensive criminal record, and some do have mental health diagnosis. Should anything like this to take place, Probation Officer is trained how to handle the situation.

I have multiple offices assigned to me, Pasadena, where intern is assigned being one of them. I regularly visit my offices and Probation Officer whom intern will shadow and will be assisting, will be reporting to me her performance. In addition, I will be checking in with intern personal myself as well.
