Duties include directly assisting with: assessing public health education needs; planning, implementing, and evaluating public health education interventions and activities; assessing, developing, and testing health-related materials and messages; conducting community outreach; and linking internal and external stakeholders with health education consultation services. The Undergraduate Health Education intern is placed within the Health Education Unit of the Area Health Office.

Tasks:

• Assist in planning, organizing, and delivering community workshops for the Whittier Wellness Community, including preparing materials, and helping set up the event space.
• Create culturally appropriate educational materials such as flyers, handouts, and presentation slides to diverse community audiences.
• Participate in community outreach activities by staffing information tables, distributing health education materials, and engaging community members in conversations about relevant public health topics.
• Assist with data collection, tracking attendance, and compiling feedback from community workshops or outreach events.
• Attend team meetings and shadow staff to gain an understanding of health program operations, workflow, and community engagement strategies.
• Provide general administrative support such as photocopying, organizing materials, preparing packets, and documenting activities completed during the internship.

Training:

Intern Onboarding and Orientation:
At the start of the internship, the supervisor will introduce the intern to all staff members, provide an overview of the Whittier Wellness Community programs, and explain the intern’s role within the team. The intern will receive a detailed orientation packet outlining expectations, communication procedures, and day-to-day workflows.

Mandatory Training Requirements:
As part of onboarding, the intern will be provided with a list of required trainings to complete. Mandatory training includes:
– Cal/OSHA Compliance Suite
– Community Readiness Champion Gold Medal Training
– County Policy of Equity
– HIPAA for Covered Entities
– Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Prevention
The supervisor will ensure the intern has access to the training platforms and will monitor completion.

Daily One-on-One Check-In Meetings:
The intern will meet with the supervisor each day to review assigned tasks, clarify expectations, and discuss any questions related to ongoing projects or community events. These brief daily check-ins will help ensure the intern feels supported and receives consistent direction.

Shadowing Opportunities:
The intern will regularly shadow staff members during workshops, outreach events, meetings, and day-to-day program activities. Through observation, the intern will gain insight into effective community engagement strategies, public health education techniques, and overall program operations.

Ongoing Feedback and Coaching:
Throughout the internship, the supervisor will provide informal feedback during daily interactions and task reviews. Feedback will focus on strengthening the intern’s communication skills, professional conduct, organizational abilities, and understanding of public health practices.

Periodic Evaluation and Goal Review:
In addition to daily check-ins, the supervisor will schedule periodic evaluations to review the intern’s progress toward learning outcomes, identify areas for improvement, and adjust assignments as needed to support continued skill development.

Learning Outcome:

By the end of the internship, the student will be able to:
• Demonstrate an understanding of community health education principles by assisting in the planning and delivery of public health workshops and presentations.
• Apply public health communication strategies by creating culturally appropriate educational materials tailored to diverse community populations.
• Describe key components of public health program implementation, including outreach, partnership engagement, and participant support.
• Conduct basic community outreach by engaging residents in conversations about public health topics and providing accurate, accessible information.
• Utilize observational learning to identify effective techniques for community engagement, workshop facilitation, and program coordination.
• Apply foundational knowledge of public health compliance and standards, including Cal/OSHA requirements, HIPAA regulations, County Policy of Equity, and sexual harassment and discrimination prevention.
• Demonstrate the ability to track program participation and utilize feedback to support program evaluation and improvement.
• Communicate effectively in a community health setting through clear verbal interactions, informational messaging, and culturally responsive engagement.
• Explain how public health programs are developed, implemented, and monitored within a local health department setting.
