Tutor CoordinatorAt — School on Wheels
Imagine being the one person who shows up consistently for a child who has everything working against them. That's what our tutors do. School on Wheels connects volunteers like you with students experiencing homelessness — virtually, on your schedule. You'll get access to our own curriculum and resources, work one-on-one with your student at their level, and do more than just tutor — you'll mentor. One hour a week can change a life.
Volunteering with School on Wheels is more than just tutoring — it's a transformative experience that stays with you long after your sessions end. Our tutors walk away with real, hands-on teaching skills, learning how to break down complex concepts, adapt to different learning styles, and use virtual classroom technology with confidence. But the growth goes far beyond academics. Working with students experiencing homelessness teaches you things no classroom can. You'll learn how to build genuine trust with a child who has faced instability, how to show up with patience and consistency even when progress feels slow, and how to communicate with compassion across different backgrounds and experiences. You'll gain a deeper understanding of the challenges facing homeless families and leave with a perspective on the world that truly changes you. For those pursuing careers in education, social work, counseling, psychology, or healthcare, the experience is invaluable. Our tutors develop mentorship and leadership skills, gain meaningful nonprofit experience, and build a resume that stands out — all while making a lasting impact on a child who needed someone to believe in them. One hour a week. One student. A lifetime of growth — for both of you.
We set every tutor up for success from day one. New volunteers receive an Introductory Training covering everything they need to know about our program, followed by a personalized one-on-one training to get comfortable with our virtual tutoring platform. A few months into tutoring, volunteers are invited to an Advanced Training session to deepen their skills and explore additional resources to support their students' growth.
Once your application is submitted, you will receive a welcome call from your coordinator to walk you through the next steps. From there, you will submit your personal references and watch a brief online orientation video to get familiar with our program. You will then attend an Introductory Training to prepare you for tutoring, and complete your Live Scan fingerprinting. Once all steps are complete, you will be officially approved and ready to be matched with your student!
