As a student intern in the CSUSM Campus Tours Office, students gain valuable professional, leadership, and customer service experience while serving as ambassadors for the university. Interns develop skills that are highly transferable to future careers and graduate opportunities.
Student interns will gain: Public Speaking & Presentation Skills through leading campus tours and engaging diverse audiences. Leadership Development by representing CSUSM, mentoring peers, and taking initiative in campus visit programs. Communication & Interpersonal Skills through interactions with prospective students, families, school groups, alumni, and campus partners. Event Planning & Program Management Experience by assisting with visit programs, special events, and recruitment initiatives. Customer Service Expertise through providing welcoming, informative, and personalized experiences for campus visitors. Teamwork & Collaboration Skills while working closely with fellow student employees and professional staff. Problem-Solving & Adaptability by responding to visitor needs, managing unexpected situations, and supporting dynamic event environments. Professional Development including time management, organizational skills, professionalism, and workplace etiquette. Networking Opportunities through connections with university staff, campus departments, enrollment professionals, and community partners. Career Readiness by building confidence, strengthening resumes, and gaining practical experience in higher education, communications, marketing, event management, and student affairs. The Campus Tours Office internship provides students with hands-on experience that fosters confidence, leadership, professionalism, and a deep understanding of higher education operations while helping prospective students envision their future at CSUSM.
Customer Service and Hospitality Training to help interns provide welcoming, inclusive, and professional experiences for prospective students, families, and guests. Campus Tour Guide Training covering tour routes, campus landmarks, university history, traditions, academic programs, student services, and key campus resources. Professional Development Workshops focused on leadership, teamwork, conflict resolution, time management, professionalism, and career readiness. Technology and Administrative Training on office systems, scheduling tools, communication platforms, and visitor management processes. Shadowing and Mentorship Opportunities where new interns observe experienced tour guides and receive coaching, feedback, and support from professional staff.
