Opportunity Summary 

Growing minds provides an opportunity for college students to gain hands-on experiences and knowledge of how young children grow and develop. Students are introduced to the field of early childhood education and care, gaining both theoretical knowledge and practical skills to work effectively with children ages 0-5 years. Students are in a classroom setting working alongside teachers and how an opportunity to interact with children during their daily routines. The student will have an opportunity to work collaboratively with classroom teachers on implementation of developmentally appropriate activities.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students will have an opportunity to see how young children grow and develop through both child development theories and direct interaction with children during everyday activities. Students will gain knowledge of child development principles and how they apply in real-world settings. student will gain understanding that children develop at their own individual pace, while recognizing general age-related patterns of development.

Opportunity Training 

Students participate in an orientation meeting with the site supervisor that covers the following topics: Health and safety for children and themselves, emergency preparedness, policies and procedures related to communication, interacting with individual and groups of children. Students will also be provided a tour of the center to include classrooms environments, outdoor environments, restrooms and break areas, and an introduction to with all staff working on site.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

It is recommended that student wear comfortable closed toed shoes daily.

Within 3 days of requesting placement, student will receive an email with information on placement, contact information, and requirements to begin their service learning/internship.
