Food DistributionsAt — The Bethesda Recovery Center DBA Choices in Recovery
Choices in Recovery provides a hands-on service-learning opportunity to support our community food distribution program in partnership with Feeding America. Students will help with receiving, sorting, and organizing donated food for individuals experiencing food insecurity, including participants in the residential substance use recovery program and members of the surrounding community. Students will get experience in nonprofit operations, teamwork, resource coordination, and service work. Students will work alongside staff to make sure food is handled safely, organized efficiently, and distributed to those in need in a timely fashion.
Students will have a better understanding of food insecurity, community needs, and the role nonprofit organizations play in supporting individuals and families locally. Students will gain hands-on experience in food distribution, organization, teamwork, oral communication, and community resource coordination. Students should develop an awareness of how social determinants of health, including food insecurity and access to resources, can impact overall well-being. This opportunity helps students strengthen their professional and academic skills while they learn the importance of respectful and equitable community service.
Students are required to complete in-house training provided by Choices in Recovery prior to beginning service-learning activities. Training includes: Orientation and Emergency Procedures (1 hr), HIPAA and Confidentiality (2 hr), and Sexual Harassment in CA (1 hr).
Students should be able to safely lift up to 50 pounds. Closed-toed shoes and appropriate clothing are required for shifts. Students are expected to follow staff directions for proper lifting techniques and food handling. All safety concerns, injuries, or hazards need to be reported immediately to the on-site supervisor.
