Intern: Marketing and Communications Intern 

Reports To: Anne Grey, Chief Executive Officer OR Communications Specialist Staff Member

Location: Irvine, CA 

Department: Marketing

 

Internship Summary: 

At Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire, we grant life changing wishes to children with critical illnesses. The Marketing and Communications Intern will assist with marketing and communications as well as creating and developing content and social management efforts of Make-A-Wish Orange County and the Inland Empire. The Intern will also further develop skills in marketing, brand management, and written and oral communications. 

 

Responsibilities:  

  • Creating promotional materials for both internal and external use  

  • Support marketing operations by assisting with the monthly newsletter and event marketing  

  • Provide updates to the Make-A-Wish OCIE Chapter website as needed  

  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications staff and other departments to ensure cohesive branding and messaging across all platforms  

  • Stay up-to-date with the latest social media trends, tools, and best practices to continuously improve our social media strategy  

  • Assist with developing content, including text, images and videos, to showcase wish stories, events, and fundraising initiatives 

 Internship Qualifications: 

  • Marketing, Public Relations, and Communications majors preferred but not required 

  • Should possess excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills 

  • Familiarity with graphic design preferred 

  • Comfortability learning new platforms/systems 

  • Bilingual in English/Spanish ideal 

  • Requires a passion for and commitment to the work of Make-A-Wish 

Training

General internship program orientation, Make-A-Wish branding and chapter-specific training, one-on-one supervisory meetings.

- Develop foundational knowledge of marketing and communications strategies in a nonprofit environment.

Content Creation & Digital Media
- Build skills in developing multimedia content including written copy, images, and videos.
- Learn storytelling techniques to communicate wish stories, fundraising initiatives, and organizational impact.
- Gain experience creating content tailored for different digital platforms and audiences.

Social Media Management
- Understand social media planning, content scheduling, and engagement strategies.
- Learn how to monitor and apply social media trends, tools, and best practices.
- Develop skills in supporting and improving an organization's social media presence.

Brand Management
- Learn how to maintain consistent branding and messaging across multiple communication channels.
- Gain experience collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure brand alignment.
- Understand the role of brand management in building awareness and donor engagement.

Website & Digital Communications
- Develop practical experience updating and maintaining website content.
- Learn website content management and digital communication best practices.
- Gain exposure to online audience engagement and user-focused content delivery.

Professional & Collaborative Skills
- Strengthen written and verbal communication skills through content development and team collaboration.
- Build project management and organizational skills by supporting newsletters, events, and marketing initiatives.
- Gain experience working in a professional nonprofit setting and collaborating across departments.
