Opportunity Summary 

This service learning opportunity provides CSUSM students with hands-on experience supporting teaching and learning in an elementary school setting. Volunteers will work alongside credentialed classroom teachers to gain practical experience in lesson preparation, classroom instruction, student engagement, small-group activities, and classroom management. Students will observe experienced educators, assist with differentiated learning activities, and build positive relationships with elementary students while developing an understanding of the day-to-day responsibilities of an elementary school teacher.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the opportunity, students will understand the daily responsibilities and professional expectations of elementary school teachers and gain practical experience supporting instruction, classroom management, and student learning. Students will develop skills in planning and implementing age-appropriate activities, working with students individually and in small groups, communicating effectively with students and school staff, and responding to diverse learning needs. They will apply concepts from their CSUSM coursework to real classroom experiences, reflect on their professional growth, and demonstrate professionalism, confidentiality, appropriate boundaries, and ethical conduct while building confidence and practical skills for a career in elementary education.

Opportunity Training 

Students will receive an initial orientation before beginning their classroom responsibilities. Training will include an overview of school policies and procedures, expectations for professional conduct, student confidentiality and privacy, appropriate adult-student boundaries, classroom safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
