Psychology Research Intern (PSYC 495) - Prof. OkadoAt — CSUF - College of Humanities & Social Science

Opportunity Summary 

Dr. Okado is looking for up to 2 research interns to provide lab research assistance as part of internship (PSYC 495).

This is a great position for students who are:

  • Interested in interdisciplinary research (psychology, computer science, AI), and/or
  • Applying for graduate school in the future

Duties include helping with day-to-day research tasks, including participant recruitment, data collection/checking/cleaning, editing transcripts and video involved in our AI mentoring platform, literature searches, etc. 

Most of the research duties will be conducted remotely (with occasional on-campus outreach activities) and involve a large study involving STEM outreach with AI-based virtual agent-mentors (Psychology Pathways project). Candidates must be available to schedule 8 hours per week of lab work during the week (M-F, 9am-5pm).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Excellent professionalism, communication skills, initiative/drive, and attention to detail
  • Ability to attend weekly lab meetings and additional meetings on an as-needed basis
  • Comfort with learning and using different computer-based platforms quickly
  • Strong interest in STEM outreach and pursuing graduate school or research-based career
  • Preference is given to candidates that can stay in lab for at least 1 year (e.g., take PSYC 495 this semester, then take PSYC 499 or lab research the next semester)

Applicants will be screened and interviewed during the first 2 weeks of classes until all positions are filled.

Training:

On-boarding procedures (including CITI training if assisting with research), regular check-ins with supervisor, supervision of ongoing tasks on an online task management platform (e.g., Basecamp), weekly lab meetings

Remote supervision via Zoom, email, and Basecamp

Learning Outcomes:

1. Demonstrate research skills at the senior undergraduate level
2. Manage tasks in multiple online platforms (e.g., Canvas, Basecamp)
3. Demonstrate better understanding of day-to-day operations of a Psychology research methods course and/or laboratory
