Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE)At — Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE)
Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) workers are underpaid, understaffed, and under-resourced. The average hourly wage for SNF workers in LA County is $16.75 an hour, with a median annual salary of $25,000. Low wages are a main, but not the only factor that causes almost 50% of SNF workers to leave after 1 year. Chronically understaffed, and often under-resourced with appropriate PPE, SNF workers - most being immigrant women of color - carry the physical, mental, and emotional weight of having to provide critical care to our most vulnerable when they themselves are barely making ends meet. Together with the over 40 organizations part of our coalition, LAANE's Quality Care Campaign will fight for a nursing home quality standards board, local facility licensing authority, a $20 living wage for SNF workers, a SNF consumer-facing facility rating system, and the ability to form worker health and safety committees in SNFs.
Students will understand the systemic issues causing the nursing home industry to deliver sub-standard care. They will engage in direct contact/mobilization efforts to pass policy, engage directly with nursing home operators and residents as needed, as well as help educate the broader public on the issues surrounding the industry through social media or other avenues.
Students will be oriented prior to any project related task being asked of them.
LAANE currently asks all staff to wear masks indoors, take necessary precautions if anyone has been exposed or is feeling ill.
