Service-Learning OpportunitiesAt — Housing Opportunities Made Easier (HOME)
SPRING 2024:
PURPOSE
In partnership with CSUCI, HOME aspires to conduct a survey of Ventura County residents about their current housing situation, needs and future expectations. Survey data will be analyzed, presented at the 2024 Ventura County Housing Conference on October 24th, and used to advocate for building the types of housing our community needs.
PROCESS
- A 10-question survey in both English and Spanish has already been developed and made available to the public (www.surveymonkey.com/r/5Q377C8 ; https://es.surveymonkey.com/r/5S7TFLW). This may be tweaked and migrated to a CSUCI system (Qualtrics).
- Students are needed to collect survey responses from the general public, primarily through in-person digital data entry at community gatherings.
- Survey participants should be diverse in age (16+), socioeconomics, education, culture, etc.
- Students will work together in groups of 2 or more and be provided with a tablet/device if needed.
- Verbal proficiency in a language other than English is desired but not required.
- Student surveyors should be outgoing, friendly, and able to approach people.
- Data will be analyzed by CSUCI students in the Economics department, with results summarized and presented in both written and graphic form.
- Students will present the project and results at the 2024 Ventura County Housing Conference on October 24th in Camarillo. This conference is attended by over 200 community development and housing professionals.
- Depending on the sample size collected, this project may continue beyond the 10-24-2024 presentation date.
FALL 2023:
Produce two 15-minute videos.
1) Compile, and edit a video of 6 to 8 interviews of housing-challenged people. Film due in early October; HOME will provide video (MP4?) files of each interview.
2) Help film the Oct. 13th housing conference, edit, and produce a highlight video to be shared with city and industry leaders (due early Dec).
For each video, HOME will confer with students about the purpose of the desired finished product. The student will have artistic license to create the short films from the raw footage to meet end goals.
Filming, editing and production skills. State of current housing in Ventura County. Interact with leaders at a professional conference.
Student will need to have some prior film editing experience. We can provide access to equipment and training (possibly) through CAPS Media Center in Ventura as HOME is a member there.
No safety issues we are aware of at this time
