PR/Mass Media Internship

PROGRAM
Higher Ground Youth & Family Services is a non profit community learning center that provides mentoring programs and services to youth and families living in underserved communities. A wide collaboration of partners support our mission to meet the needs of low income and disadvantaged neighborhoods. Continual and ongoing expansion of our services assures that we are able respond to the needs of the community.

POSITION SUMMARY

This PR/Mass Media internship role will be responsible for curating content and assisting with the planning and execution of social media strategies. Maintaining a robust social media calendar is crucial, while writing creative and engaging content to engage our donors and volunteers. Expanding our reach into new communities that may provide funding is key. Networking with local community members and local businesses to solicit donations and additional streams of funding is encouraged.

This position requires constant out of the box thinking to improve our PR and social media presence.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Gather needed content for social media posts on multiple platforms
• Create and schedule posts at a minimum of twice a week as well as posting stories regularly
• Create & monitor ideas for spotlight campaigns, specific program and event highlights
• Increasing website and SM site traffic
• Updating website as needed

AS per interest of intern:
• Possibility of a fundraising event
• Possibility of researching potential grants and funding opportunities
• Possibility of assistance with writing grant proposals

QUALIFICATIONS

Strong written communication skills
Ability to plan and execute social media strategies
Creative and knowledgeable on social media trends and preferred content to attract donors and members alike
Strong team player
Willingness and eagerness to learn new things

Complete a background check

Tasks:

Support the creation of engaging content for social media, newsletters, and print materials.
Maintain and update a content calendar aligned with organizational events and campaigns.
Collaborate with staff to highlight program activities, youth stories (with consent), and impact-driven work.
Assist in organizing media and photo archives to support storytelling efforts.
Represent Higher Ground’s brand and values in all external-facing communications.
Participate in team meetings, trainings, and one-on-one check-ins for ongoing learning.
Help track engagement and audience reach through basic metrics and analytics tools.
Contribute creative ideas for outreach, donor engagement, and community visibility.
Ensure ethical standards in content creation, including protecting youth privacy and using strengths-based language.
May assist with event promotion and community outreach efforts.
Additional duties as assigned by supervisor.

TRAINING

Onboarding Orientation - Introduce interns to Higher Ground’s mission, values, culture, and expectations.

Weekly One-on-Ones with Site Supervisor or PR Lead - Provide personalized support, feedback, and reflection time.

Hands-On Skills Training - Build technical and creative skills through real-time learning.

End-of-Internship Reflection & Celebration - Acknowledge growth and capture takeaways.

Communication: Communicate clearly and effectively in both written, oral and digital forms

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving: Students will demonstrate critical thinking characterized by the ability to define business problems

Leadership and Team Collaboration: Student’s leadership skills will be seen in taking initiative, and communicating objectives

Comprehension and Application of New Media: Students should demonstrate their understanding of the various new medias such as; social media, mobile technology, search engine optimization, viral advertising. As well as be able to express ideas and concepts

Digital Ethics: Students will recognize ethical and moral issues, identify needed actions, and demonstrate the courage to implement them.
