Walk and Bike Smart VolunteerAt — Ecology Action

Opportunity Summary

Students who are interested in youth education and/or are passionate about the environment or want to take local climate action are encouraged to apply.

The Walk and Bike Smart Program focuses on teaching kids about pedestrian and bike safety by providing a fun, educational, on-foot learning experience for elementary students. Whether or not students walk or bike to school, learning the safety protocols is an essential and critical life skill.

Locations can depend on the program you sign up for. We have opportunities all around the Monterey County (Salinas, Monterey, Soledad, King City) and in Santa Cruz County.

Students who participate in the Walk and Bike Smart Program will:

  • assist Ecology Action Staff with instruction of youth in bike and pedestrian safety trainings to 2nd and 5th grade students (bike skills obstacle courses),
  • set up obstacle courses using cones and chalk and break down obstacle courses,
  • help at community events during the weekend, and
  • prepare materials for and assist with classroom presentations.

8 service learner spots

Requirements:

  • Background Check (e.g. fingerprinting/livescan, driving record)
  • Driver's License (Must be able to get to the various locations)
  • Must be 18 or older
  • TB Test
  • Bilingual Desired
Opportunity Training

First is a 45 minute orientation. Then an in-person training happens during their first Walk or Bike Smart event and these events typically occur from 8am-1pm (prone to change depending on the school site we visit).

Regular check-ins, keeping lines of communication open, creating a friendly work environment, giving and receiving feedback, clearly defining policies and procedures, communicating volunteer impact, providing in-depth orientations and trainings, and recognizing them for hard work are all ways Ecology Action will supervise service learners.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity
  • We are working with minors; therefore, photography and videography are not allowed
  • A valid CA driver's license and personal auto insurance information is necessary because students will be required to drive to various locations across Monterey County
  • Students will work under direct supervision at all times.
