Opportunity Summary 

Primary Objective: To support the health, safety, and overall well-being of cats, dogs, and small animals in the shelter’s care through the use of positive and force free training techniques while supporting a helpful experience for visitors and potential adopters.  By providing compassionate interaction and basic care, volunteers help reduce stress for animals, improve their adoptability, and support shelter staff in achieving the organization's mission of humane and responsible animal care.

Minimum Time Commitment: One 3-hr shift per week for 3 months

Shifts: You will sign-up for your shift in your volunteer orientation and are assigned on a first come first serve basis.

Duties and Responsibilities (may include all or some of the following):

  • Dog Adoptions
    • Assist with laundry, dishes, stock cabinets and fill water bowls.
    • Clean kennels, windows and clean up after dogs in enclosures/playgrounds and on all trails to maintain good hygiene.
    • Walk and socialize adoptable dogs you can comfortably handle.
    • Assist visitors by answering questions, provide leashes, and if needed, assist with getting dogs in and out of enclosures.
    • Provide daily enrichments such as engaging toys & stuffed KONGs.
    • Record all walks and interactions using a walking log.
    • Report signs and symptoms of illness and injury to staff.

 

  • Cat Adoptions and/or Small Animals:
    • Assist with laundry, dishes, stock cabinets, and fill water bowls.
    • Clean enclosures, windows and litter boxes to maintain good hygiene.
    • Socialize adoptable cats/small animals you can comfortably handle.
    • Assist visitors by answering questions, and if needed, assist with getting cats in and out of enclosures.
    • Report signs and symptoms of illness and injury to staff.

Volunteer Attributes:

  • Ability to follow animal handling procedures and guidelines.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently without direct supervision.
  • Has good attention to detail and is comfortable reading and writing important information.
  • Ability to engage people in a friendly and helpful manner and has a team-oriented attitude.

Working Environment:

  • Comfort in handling and experiencing cat, dog, and small animal noises and smells.
  • Able to stand for extended periods of time and repeatedly bend up and down to clean or handle animals.

Requirements:

  • $40 Volunteer Administration Fee (Covers your background check and t-shirt) (Student responsible for payment)
  • Background Check for anyone 18 years old and older
  • Minimum of 36 hours - one 3-hr shift per week for 3 months
Opportunity Training 
  • Students will have to attend an in-person 1hr orientation (which does not count towards your community service hours). 
  • Attend the required Adoption Center training (Tour and Dog Handling training for those working with dogs).
  • Other trainings via video and PowerPoints.

  • Select "Yes, I need to complete 25+ hours" for the service hours question.
  • Indicate in the Comments that you are a CSUMB service learner 

After you complete the form, staff will contact you to review your availability and schedule an orientation.

You will also need to complete additional paperwork for the SPCA in addition to registering your placement in CSUMB's system.  All CSUMB paperwork will be signed after your SPCA orientation.  Please do not send CSUMB forms prior to your orientation.
