Otter Media SLAt — Otter Media

Opportunity Summary

Otter Media – Service Learning Site

Service Learning participants at Otter Media have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in event planning, live production, music and film, DJ services, community engagement, and other creative projects. Opportunities vary throughout the semester based on upcoming events, partnerships, and student interests.

Service Learners work alongside Otter Media student staff, other Service Learners, volunteers, and campus and community partners to support productions, events, and ongoing projects.

Service Learning Opportunities

Depending on individual interests, experience, availability, and current projects, Service Learners may participate in activities such as:

  • Athletics and Campus Event Support: Support CSUMB athletic games and other campus events by providing music, announcements, and DJ services. Students may assist with music selection, event playlists, audio setup, live announcements, and creating an engaging atmosphere for attendees.
  • Event Planning and Production: Help plan and support Otter Media events, including concerts, performances, town halls, and other campus and community events.
  • Live Production: Assist with live productions involving music, film, performances, interviews, and special events. Responsibilities may include setup, production support, operating equipment, audio support, and breakdown.
  • Community Events: Participate in Otter Media's involvement with events throughout Monterey County, including farmers markets, arts and cultural events, and other community activities.
  • Media and Creative Projects: Collaborate on semester-based projects with Otter Media and its campus or community partners. Projects change each semester depending on partner needs, available opportunities, and student interests.
  • Music and Artist Outreach: Connect with local musicians and performers and help coordinate opportunities for them to participate in upcoming Otter Media events and productions.
  • The Current Talk Show: Support the development and production of The Current, including identifying potential guests and topics, coordinating with community participants, and assisting with production.
  • Studio and Production Support: Assist with the general upkeep and organization of the Otter Media studio, production equipment, digital files, scheduling systems, music libraries, and software.
  • Additional Opportunities: Take part in new productions, collaborations, and special projects as opportunities arise throughout the semester.

Scheduling Expectations

Many Otter Media opportunities take place outside of traditional class hours. Athletic events, concerts, live productions, and community events may occur during evenings or weekends and may require longer shifts. Service Learners should be prepared for some flexibility in scheduling based on the events and projects they choose to participate in.

Hosting a regular weekly radio or television program does not fulfill Service Learning hour requirements. Service Learning hours must be earned through participation in approved Otter Media service activities, events, projects, and community engagement opportunities.

Available Positions

4–6 Service Learner positions are available each semester.

Students interested in event production, DJing, music, athletics, film, live production, creative projects, or community engagement are encouraged to participate. Previous media, audio, or DJ experience is helpful but not required. Students should be willing to learn, collaborate, communicate reliably, and engage with both the CSUMB and Monterey County communities.

Opportunity Training

Students will need to attend an orientation meeting before accruing hours.  Students will also need to participate in trainings on Otter Media camera equipment usage and station operations.

Opportunity Application Instructions

Service learners will need to participate in a group interview with the Station Managers before being accepted.  Please include your weekly availability in your initial email to Denise Tambasco.
