School Counselor InternAt — San Diego County Office of Education - SOAR Academy

Opportunity Summary 

With this internship opportunity, you will work closely with the School Counselor(s) at the Youth Transition Campus at Juvenile Hall in Kearny Mesa. We get to know all the students as they stay here, some are here for 1-2 months, some are here for 6-7 months. We work with them on goal setting, resumes, college applications, career exploration, conflict resolution, etc. We also reach out to the families and work with them.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes 

Students should be able to know how to work with youth who have experienced homelessness, foster care system, and incarceration. They will learn how to work with students who have various challenges such as substance abuse disorders, anger management, IEPs and special education services, mental health issues, poverty, and social injustice.

Opportunity Training 

The two Professional School Counselors will provide training in the above areas.
