Mobile Science Workshop Student Mentor- Salinas Community Science WorkshopAt — Salinas Community Science Workshop
A custom modified MST bus will deliver an entire functioning workshop to neighborhoods of Salinas providing the opportunity for kids and families to explore with science and construct the projects of their imaginations out of simple tools and materials.
We will deliver this program at least twice weekly to different neighborhoods, open for two and a half hours at each session. Service learners / Mentors will engage with participants by guiding project building*, enforcing saftey practices, aiding in clean up/closing and potentially lead science workshops.
While service dates are still be finalized we anticipate the Salinas Community Science Workshop on Wheels to operate:
- Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Locations will include local libraries and elementary schools. Futher details of sites and times will be confirmed during orientation.
*Project building may including anything from building stomp rockets, guiding participants through our science exhibits, bicycle restoration, and more. We welcome all skill levels including those with no prior experience to hands on education/building. Our workshop leads with empowering the community to think through challenges, try ideas, and adapt to findings!

Students should expect to participate in an organization orientation to better inform them on the goals, mission, and culture of Salinas Community Science Workshop. Students will also be required to participate in a building fundamentals workshop, where skills such as using a drill, building small wooden projects, and ensuring compliance of safety standards are overviewed.

Students will have access to multiple mentors and supervisors throughout their service. The site supervisors will support all onboarding, administrative and service troubleshooting needs, while the project coordinator will provide support on mentorship fundamentals, science discourse, and scheduling/hours support.
Machinery such as scroll saws, drill press, drills and basic building tools will be present. Safety trainings will cover use of all potentially hazardous tools.
This placement requires working with hazardous materials, heavy equipment, construction equipment, heights, or heavy machinery.
