Youth Development and HT Prevention InternAt — Higher Ground Youth & Family Services
Higher Ground is currently welcoming interns and service learners to work with youth ages 7 to 17 years of age. This is a great opportunity for you to share your skills and develop new ones while having a positive impact on your community.
About Higher Ground
Higher Ground Youth & Family Services is a nonprofit organization that provides mentoring programs for youth living in at-risk communities in Anaheim. Our mission is to facilitate exploration and discovery of life’s possibilities through mentorship, as we expand purpose and possibilities for youth and their families. The goal of Higher Ground is to promote positive educational habits, strong interpersonal skills, and a sense of empowerment. Higher Ground identifies youth who are at risk for gang induction and other risky behaviors and offer a positive support system to avoid the pitfalls that can derail lives. We provide a friendly and safe community where all may feel welcome to play, learn, and grow in body, mind, and spirit.
Tasks:
· Interns and service learners will provide mentoring through a variety of educational, athletic, social and leadership experiences to youth in at risk communities.
· Interns and service learners may be involved with our Human Trafficking Prevention Program (HTPP) by facilitating and presenting HT curriculum in middle and high school health classes. Interns may also be asked to train other presenters on materials and assist with scheduling.
· Interns and service learners will interact with Higher Ground youth and engage them in music, dance, art, and other activities including tutoring and college readiness skills.
Training:
Supervisor will provide interns and service learners with orientation for Higher Ground program objectives and expectations. Additional training for HT Prevention program will be given as required.
Learning outcomes:
1. Engage with youth and their families to better understand the needs of our population.
2. Understand and address socio-cultural issues within the community.
3. Appreciate the psycho/socio-cultural nuances of community needs within a marginalized population.
4. Engage in HT Prevention efforts
Schedule: Hours may vary depending on activity. HTPP may run 8am -5pm, youth mentoring will run from 1:00-6:00 pm, approximately.
Background checks are required for all students working with Higher Ground youth.
