The HR Intern does go through an interview process and must get fingerprinted in order to work in the HR department at the YMCA. They are provided an orientation to the HR Office and the duties they will assist with. They are monitored each day they are in our office.
Training:
How to review applications
How to administer proficiency tests
How to enter data on HRIS
How to do file maintenance/compliance
We provide the HR Intern with a volunteer position description of the various duties they will perform in the HR Department. HR staff completely trains the Intern on each task and monitors their progress. As time permits, HR staff give additional tasks to work on when the Intern has mastered the previous tasks. We try to give them as much knowledge about working in an HR Department for a non-profit organization as possible. Several of HR Interns have gone on to get either PT or FT Human Resources jobs! One of our Interns even got a job with Google as a Recruiter up in Northern CA and another became an Executive Director for a Community Food Distributor Non-Profit organization!
Learning Outcomes:
Provide an overview of many HR functions in a very busy, fast paced HR environment.
Our HR Interns do administrative tasks and we have them do a variety of tasks including internet research, posting job openings, test administration, assist with onboarding new hires, etc. If the HR Intern gives us an outline of what is required to receive college credits, we will ensure that they get whatever is needed to get the credit. We are very flexible with them to ensure it’s meaningful/knowledge based.
