Title IX and Gender Equity Undergraduate Student InternAt — CSUF - Human Resources, Diversity and Inclusion
This role offers experience in researching, supporting, and assessing best practices for sexual misconduct prevention education programs in a diverse university setting. This position is designed to support departmental efforts in improving evidence-based prevention education, outreach, and communications following a public health model of prevention. While discretion and respect for privacy are necessary qualities, this position will not be part of any response to sexual misconduct reports or complaints.
Essential Duties:
Research and Evidence-Based Proposals
o Conduct research into best practices and currently popular practices for the prevention of discrimination, harassment, and misconduct related to sex, gender, and sexual orientation on college campuses, including reading articles/book chapters, reviewing conference materials and white papers, and reviewing other institutions’ publicly available data
o Conduct research into the development of tailored sexual misconduct prevention and education messaging using a public health approach, including researching relevant risk and protective factors that may be present within subpopulations at CSUF and relevant communications that may help address unique challenges and opportunities for the campus’s diverse community
o Compile findings from research into best practices, currently popular practices, and risk and protective factors relevant to CSUF students and employees to propose improvements or new directions for Title IX and Gender Equity’s prevention and outreach efforts
o Review available data into students’ and employees’ perceptions of campus safety, campus climate, and proclivity toward bystander intervention to distill takeaways and insights that can be employed in future department presentations and trainings
Education and Outreach
o Assist in the development and implementation of outreach efforts regarding:
§ The prevention of discrimination, harassment, and misconduct related to sex, gender, and sexual orientation
§ Raising awareness of the services available through Title IX and Gender Equity and relevant campus departments
o Assist professional staff in Title IX and Gender Equity with brainstorming for in-person and online trainings, workshops, and events
o Assist with and attend student-focused awareness and education events
o Help represent Title IX and Gender Equity at tabling events and other public outreach
o Assist with event set-up, day-of production, clean-up, and organization of supplies before and after events as needed
o Review website content, flyers, presentations, videos, and other educational materials in development to provide suggestions based on student and personal feedback
Department Communication & Development
o Engage in learning opportunities as assigned (readings, research, watch videos, meet with relevant staff, participate in Title IX Student Ambassador Program, etc.) to increase knowledge base and professional skills related to:
§ A public health approach to misconduct prevention
§ The role of a Title IX and Gender Equity office within a university community
§ The role that a public health perspective plays in educational programming across the Student Affairs Division at CSUF
o Engage in occasional planning meetings with Title IX and Gender Equity staff
o Engage in 1-on-1 meetings with site supervisor and other professional staff as appropriate
o Regularly check and respond to emails and other messages to ensure timely management of all tasks and projects
Special Projects
o Dependent on the specific skillsets and interests of the selected candidate, this role may take on special projects as reasonably available and appropriate
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the internship, the student will be able to...
• More confidently discuss best practices for a public health approach to sexual misconduct prevention, including learning about relevant risk and protective factors and applying the Social-Ecological Model as a framework for program planning
• Distill research and available data into short takeaways for use in department presentations and/or planning
• Translate detailed and/or dense material into easily accessible messaging for diverse audiences
• Understand and speak more confidently about CSU policies and procedures related to Title IX and other compliance issues related to Title IX, Jeanne Clery Act, VAWA, relevant California State law, and CSU policy
• Plan and facilitate learning activities with and for CSUF students at tabling events
• Participate meaningfully in discussions about program planning, outreach, and program logistics
• Develop and implement outreach efforts, programs, tabling event, and workshops
• Create surveys and/or analyze data via Qualtrics to facilitate assessment of outreach efforts
Training
To help the student achieve the proposed learning outcomes, I will engage in regular 1-on-1 conversations with the student intern about her tasks, professional goals, and professional development within the internship. I will also ensure that all tasks assigned to the student intern connect with the learning outcomes and the position description, which has been developed with consideration of the student's career goals for after graduation. Lastly, I will provide regular feedback on tasks in real time during each shift to ensure that the student has the ongoing feedback and support to complete the tasks and meet the learning outcomes incrementally throughout the semester.
