Sexual Assault Victim Services InternAt — Waymakers

Opportunity Summary 

This internship opportunity is limited to those already volunteering with Sexual Assault Victim Services.  Successful completion of the state-certified sexual assault crisis intervention training is also required, and interns must attend volunteer meetings for on-going training.  

Interns will assist in providing services to survivors of sexual assault and their families to help reduce the trauma associated with a crime. They will respond to hotline calls and provide on-scene advocacy at the hospital while the victim is going through the forensic exam.  Interns may also assist with education and community outreach events.

* Take calls on the 24-hour hotline.
* Respond to the hospital as a victim advocate during the forensic exam process.
* Complete all paperwork in a timely manner so staff can provide follow-up to clients.
* Attend monthly meetings for on-going training and small group debriefing.
* As available, assist staff educators with community outreach and other educational events.

Training:

* The state-certified 48-hour training is required BEFORE applying as an intern.
Interns will receive trainings on a variety of topics and group debriefing at monthly meetings. When first starting, interns will work closely with an experienced victim advocate as they progress through a trainee period. Interns will debrief all calls and cases with staff.

Learning Outcomes:

* Confidently respond to hotline calls from victims, friends and family members of the victim, law enforcement and other community members.
* Provide support to and notify victims of their rights during the forensic exam process.
* Work in partnership with the forensic nurses and law enforcement officers at Safe Place.
* Grow in skills related to crisis counseling and psychoeducation regarding sexual assault.
