Research InternAt — Boz Life Science Research and Teaching Institute
Students work as peers with researchers on diverse research projects at the Boz Institute. We prepare students for STEM careers by equipping them with practical research skills while building their confidence and providing connections to scientists and professionals in diverse fields. Students learn scientific fundamentals and participate in all phases of a research project, including fieldwork, reading research articles, formulating hypotheses, designing and executing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and showcasing their work through science seminar symposiums attended by accomplished scientists and industry leaders. We also teach soft skills (how to identify internship and job opportunities, resume, cover letter, and interview preparation) and foster opportunities for collaborations, internships, and relevant career opportunities in academia, government, and industry.
By the end of the internship, students will: • perform experiments under Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and become proficient in basic and advanced laboratory and analytical skills covered during the research immersion program • critically assess primary scientific literature and discuss aspects of hypothesis building, experimental design, and research results • search scientific databases, manage and format data, perform statistical analysis, and infer biological and environmental relevance • statistically significantly improve in scientific and analytical literacy, critical reasoning, science communication (written and oral) • complete professional development in STEM, produce a professional resume and cover letter, complete interview preparation, and communication with life science professionals from academia, government, and industry
Students will initially be trained on lab safety and basic lab equipment operation. Throughout the internship, students will learn and practice literature review, experimental design, project-specific molecular biology technique, data analysis and visualization, and scientific communication.
