Opportunity Summary 

Silverado Children's Center is a unique Nature Preschool located along Santiago Canyon Road (in between Orange and Lake Forest). We are currently hiring intern Assistant Teachers.

  • Assistant teacher applicants MUST have a minimum of 6 ECE units to qualify for the position (Pay range: $17.50 -21/hour)

In addition, you must have a love for small children (ages 2-6), animals, the outdoors, and be a team player.

Assistant Teachers work under the direction of the Lead Teacher to support the lead with curriculum planning and implementation. These teachers are responsible for proactively suggesting opportunities for developing and implementing an ongoing program of activities that promote the social, emotional, cognitive and physical development of each child enrolled in their classroom, in accordance with Title 22 and SCC’s Nature Preschool Philosophy. This position may be working with 2–3 year-olds including diapering and potty training.

Assistant Teacher Requirements:

  • 6 units of Early Childhood Education (ECE)/Child Development (CD) including core courses plus 16 general education units.
  • Enthusiasm for nature, a passion for Reggio Emilia approach curriculum, and energy to share with creative children!
  • Certification in Child CPR and First-Aid
  • Valid fingerprint clearance that has been submitted through Community Care Licensing
  • Proof of immunization upon hiring

About SCC:

A program of the Silverado Modjeska Recreation and Parks District (SMRPD), SCC offers an emergent curriculum that incorporates an appreciation of nature’s handiwork, care for living creatures, and a solid respect for the environment.

SCC provides a year-round, nature-based experience for children ages 2 to 6. Our location is conveniently located to most areas in Orange County along one of the most scenic roads in our area and provides a true environmentally authentic environment for our children.

Tasks
• Render staff support to Classroom Lead Teachers.
o Review weekly activity plans and coordinate with Lead Teacher to determine assistance needed for each activity.
o Set up and clean up relevant materials for activities as directed.
o Assist with weekly inventory of student cubbies to assess for needs (diapers, wipes, extra clothes, etc.)
• Supervise nap time as scheduled.
• Supervise children on the playground and in the classroom, on hikes and on off-site field trips.
• Encourage children to interact with each other and resolve occasional arguments.
• Interact with families (signing students in and out).
• Assist children with activities of daily life (restroom use, hand washing, etc.)
• Assist with diapering, potty training and toileting.
• Maintain classroom art & materials closets as assigned (keep them organized & handle inventory assessment as needed)
• Daily playground walkthrough wildlife and debris safety check (snakes, spiders, fallen branches, etc.)
• As needed: snack time preparation, serving and lunch time setup/cleanup.
• As needed: general housekeeping chores, animal care and playground maintenance.
• Attend staff meetings, workshops and school events as required.
• Respond to emergency calls according to protocol.

Training
- General new employee onboarding
- Lead Teacher mentoring/job shadowing
- Scheduled mentor meetings with School's Program Director to discuss goals and progress.

Learning Outcomes
- Basic classroom management in a preschool setting
- Curriculum planning experience in an early childhood setting
- Gain experience with multiple age groups (ages 2-6) to better narrow down career goals within ECE.
