Opportunity Summary 

Leatherman BioConsulting, Inc. is currently looking to fill temporary Assistant Wildlife Biologist positions. These positions require highly responsible and independent individuals who can work in an outdoor environment. The ability to identify native passerine birds is preferred. Successful candidates will assist with operating a Brown-headed Cowbird Trapping Program and be required to monitor cowbird traps and identify and record native and non-native bird captures. Candidates must be able to record accurate data, keep good records, and submit materials in an organized and timely manner. Trap locations may require driving on dirt roads so a dependable vehicle is required. In addition to being paid an hourly rate ($16-20/hr.), mileage will be reimbursed. Accurately complete time and expense reports on a bi-weekly basis.
Operate a brown-headed cowbird program on a daily basis.
Complete daily maintenance procedures to ensure sanitary conditions for wild birds.
Record daily captures and release native birds as necessary.
Submit data sheets on a weekly basis for review.

Training:

All students will attend a company orientation that will 1) give an overview of the company, 2) review the company handbook, 3) review company policies and procedures, 4) review company health and safety manuals and similar documents.
All students will be thoroughly trained to assist in the operation of a brown-headed cowbird trapping program to assist with the reproductive success of endangered birds. Training will include a review of the trapping programs and requirements in the office and a detailed field training exercise to learn data collection, wild bird capture and release, and trap maintenance.
Students will submit data on a weekly basis for review and feedback from immediate supervisor.
Students will be introduced to biological consulting industry here in southern California through exposure to other projects currently being conducted the company.

Learning Outcomes:

Identify native birds.
Safely handle and release native birds.
Accurately record trapping data to document wild bird captures.
