Opportunity Summary 

The Data Engineer Intern uses strong SQL skills and reporting tools to create self-serve reports and analytic dashboards leveraging our enterprise data warehouse. Interns at the Rock Family of Companies gain priceless, hands-on experience. Here, they learn how it feels to be in the workplace, participate in events around the city of Detroit and become a valuable member of our team.  

Tasks:

• Create reports using SQL Server Reporting Services
• Write, test and debug SQL code for use in reports
• Participate in design and code reviews
• Collaborate with business analysts and clients to understand business needs
• Design and create solutions with an emphasis on usability and performance

Training:

The student will be assigned to a technical engineering leader and will receive training from tenured, computer science professionals that will oversee their work and provide direct mentorship, training, and feedback. The student will participate in daily stand up meetings with a full team, as well as have regular one-on-one meetings with a technical lead. They will receive feedback on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis in both formal and informal settings. Feedback will be provided in person and over virtual calls. In addition to their training within the technology team, the intern will participate in general professional-level intern workshops that focus on general professional development topics and are tailored towards interns across the organization. The intern will have the opportunity to shadow a variety of computer science professionals to learn about opportunities in various areas of technology. They will also have the opportunity to work with various mentors to ensure a variety of learning opportunities.

Learning Outcome:

1. Gain a solid understanding of fundamental data engineering concepts, including data ingestion, transformation, storage, and retrieval.
2. Develop proficiency in using data manipulation tools and technologies such as SQL, Apache Spark, and ETL tools for data integration.
3. Apply learned concepts and skills to real-world data engineering projects, working collaboratively in a team environment.
