Opportunity Summary 

An internship with the Employee Wellness Program (EWP) will provide students with hands-on experience working with adults from diverse backgrounds in a physical activity setting.

The Employee Wellness Program (EWP) aims to promote physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices. This program provides CSUF faculty and staff with the opportunity to participate in a variety of exercise classes. The Department of Kinesiology operates the EWP.

The primary goals of the Employee Wellness Program are to: 1) promote physical activity, healthy lifestyle behaviors and wellness among CSUF employees and broader community; and 2) provide training in fitness assessment, exercise programing, interpersonal skills, and leadership behaviors for students in kinesiology and health-related fields.

Interns will serve as physical activity assistants in the EWP program. This involves interacting with members of the EWP, assisting them with their exercise sessions, setting goals, conducting fitness assessments and other EWP-related tasks. All interns will complete training as part of their internship.

Provide fitness Instruction: demonstration of proper exercises, stretching techniques, and equipment usage to promote safety and effectiveness

Assist with fitness testing: assist in testing client’s body composition, aerobic fitness, blood pressure, strength, lung function and flexibility

Assist in individualized coaching around fitness goals including developing individualized exercise recommendations and setting fitness and health goals

Assist and lead aspects of group exercise classes including group flexibility and core strength instruction with an emphasis on correct stretching techniques and posture

Assist coordinator and staff with the development and implementation of special fitness and health programs provided to all Cal State Fullerton employees

Other duties related to ensuring the functioning of the employee wellness program

Training:

Students will be trained to administer all instruction and testing as well as how to promote an employee wellness program on campus. This will occur both during the internship class and internship hours.

Learning Outcomes:

• Discuss and implement general exercise guidelines and safety factors for exercise programs in diverse populations
• Demonstrate proper exercises, stretching techniques and equipment usage in a safe and effective manner
• Develop interpersonal skills for leading physical activity across diverse populations
• Assist in assessing fitness levels and developing individualized exercise recommendations to meet fitness and health goals
