PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Emerging Leaders for Civic Engagement program is an award-winning comprehensive leadership program held at a school site in Irvine on Tuesdays and a school site in Santa Ana on Thursdays (both sites are scheduled from 1:00pm to 6:30pm). It is a multi-faceted program that provides public speaking and leadership training, fitness, character development, academic enrichment, drug use prevention awareness, and music appreciation.  Our Emerging Leaders for Civic Engagement program offers a synergistic forum for all participants to develop strong public speaking and leadership skills as well life-long competitive advantages.

 

INTERN’S KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Intern reports to the Program Coordinator and is primarily responsible for assisting the Coordinator by implementing the curriculum for the Emerging Leaders for Civic Engagement program. This may include updating the attendance database, preparing materials prior to class, getting the room set up before the first students arrive, and thereafter assisting with a variety of activities until 6:30pm.

 

The program consists of working with the 4th-6th grade students from 2:30pm to 4:00pm and then with the teen leaders as well, who arrive at 4:00pm and stay until 6:30pm. Youth range in age from 10 to 18 years old and participate together in various activities from 4:00pm to 6:30pm.

 Training:

Students will receive a general employer orientation, weekly one-on-one meetings with the supervising program coordinator, overview of assigned tasks with work samples when appropriate.

Learning outcome:

By the end of the academic internship, the student will demonstrate a better understanding of assigned program goals, nonprofit program implementation, tracking measures and client follow up.

QUALIFICATIONS

America On Track is seeking a qualified candidate who are passionate about helping youth develop leadership skills and a lifelong commitment to their own health, fitness, and physical wellbeing. The ideal Intern will be majoring in, or have earned a degree in, Public Health, Nutrition, Health Education, Child & Adolescent Development, Psychology or a related field. The Intern should have proficiency of most Microsoft platforms. Additionally, the Intern should have exceptional organization and communication skills to interact with program participants.

Ideally the Intern would commit for the entire school year, October thru May, however, if they cannot, a minimum of 6 months would also work.

Time for volunteering would be from 1:00pm to 6:30pm on Tuesdays and/or Thursdays. Additional hours may be available in the office.

Special Skills/Knowledge/Abilities

  • High energy and a passion for America On Track’s mission is essential.
  • Enthusiasm & ability to interact with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Professional image and good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to perform duties in a proficient manner.
  • Detail-oriented person, able to perform multiple tasks within established timelines.
  • Ability to work from 1:00pm to 6:30pm (Tuesdays/Thursdays).
  • Advanced knowledge of Apple computers and Microsoft Office, Excel, and PowerPoint is a plus.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid California driver’s license, with minimum required collision and personal injury insurance, is required.
  • Subject to applicable law, all prospective hires will be required to demonstrate that they have been fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

*IMPORTANT NOTE *

Position is UNPAID until THE INTERN COMPLETES A MINIMUM OF 6 MONTHS of Internship TO QUALIFY FOR COMPENSATION.
