Afterschool Program InternshipAt — Buena Clinton Youth and Family Center
Buena Clinton Youth and Family Center is a community-based center that focuses on youth enrichment, community involvement, and safety. The center offers a vast scope of services to the local community including: resources and referrals, counseling, homework assistance, youth enrichment activities, healthy snacks, youth leadership development skills, parent advocacy, community mobilizing, and parent workshops and trainings.
Students have the opportunity to do the following through the course of their internship:
· Working with the students in 1st –6th grades to provide assistance with homework in all subjects.
· assists students develop a better understanding of in-class and homework assignments.
· coach the student in identifying resources to complete assignments.
· review completed assignments and suggests ways to improve students school homework.
· provide positive feedback on the student’s progress and encourages the student’s continued focus on academic excellence.
· Assist with enrichment activities (i.e. arts & crafts, outdoor games, and other activities).
· Assist with special events or outreach activities as needed
· assist with clerical duties as needed and perform additional duties as assigned.
The Homework Club position requires a minimum commitment of five hours per week. In addition, each volunteer must attend an orientation prior to starting and must pass a live scan check (at no cost to students).
Training:
1. Receive a 1-2 hour orientation overviewing program policies, organizational roles, safety, programs, and services.
2. Receive additional thematic training, as necessary.
3. Receive weekly evaluations of communication journals with site supervisor, in addition to final performance evaluation.
Learning Outcome:
1. Understand operational needs of community centers.
2. Help youth in an enrichment setting.
3. Handle educational management techniques.
4. Familiar with youth enrichment activities in an after school setting.
5. Learn how to interact and engage with students in grades 1-6.
6. Observe and learn behavioral management techniques with youth
Note:
Supervisor will be available during the events after hours. Events are optional to attend. And Recreation staff is always with children and student are not left alone with children in these after school activities.
Neighborhood is not high crime area, however, there is an active gang in the neighborhood. Being a city facility, we are always in communication with police department. Staff and interns walk out together (most of the time). Supervisor will make interns aware of any situations and provide direction if necessary. Interns will park in the street near the center.<\/p>
