Government Relations InternAt — CSUSM University Advancement
Assist the Director of Government Relations with conducting legislative research, outreach, information collection, and government related projects for the University Advancement team. The intern will be responsible for:
•Conducting research on higher education related bills and legislative issues
•Drafting memos to prepare for meetings with elected officials and/or their staff, government agencies, and other related community stakeholders
•Compiling contact information and updating database
•Tracking local, state, and federal media outlets and press releases for breaking news and funding opportunities relevant to the University
•Taking detailed notes during meetings, hearings, and briefings
•Assisting the Director with event planning, coordination, and other job-related duties as assigned
Intern will obtain knowledge of our local political landscape and the policy issues and funding streams impacting our region and students. They will be presented with opportunities to network with community leaders, changemakers, elected officials, government agency leaders and staff. The skills learned will be highly transferable to a career in public service, government, law, communications, public relations, and would be valuable for any professional environment.

Intern will be supervised by the Director of Government Relations. Virtual check-ins/outs will be held to assign, train, or observe status on projects and answer any questions or concerns. On-boarding will feature multiple trainings on different aspects of the internships. Other training will be provided as needed.
Supervisor is available by phone, text, email and is receptive to questions and requests for support needed for an intern to thrive in the position.
Upon successful completion of the internship, students are offered a letter of recommendation, professional reference, and ongoing mentorship.
