STEM / Health Sciences Library InternAt — CSUSM University Library - Teaching and Learning Department
Have you ever considered becoming a librarian? If you are an undergraduate student majoring in a STEM or Health Sciences field and want to continue working in the sciences but not necessarily in a laboratory setting, science librarianship may be the career for you! The Science / Health Sciences Library Intern will work one-on-one with CSUSM librarians and will learn about different types of library jobs, practice some foundational skills of librarianship (such as conducting a reference interview), learn about different information resources in your major, and practice career skills that you can take with you wherever you go. Interested students should be: -undergraduate science / health science majors -interested in librarianship -able to work both independently and collaboratively -available for up to 10 hours per week between the hours of 8am - 6pm
By the end of this internship, you will: ● Better understand how your background in the sciences and health sciences can prepare you for a career as an academic librarian ● Understand what the day-to-day work of an academic librarian looks like ● Improve your ability to find, evaluate, and use information in the sciences and health sciences (e.g. using databases in your major, evaluating scientific claims in a newspaper article, etc.) ● Develop and improve your professional and soft skills (such as interviewing, networking, and communicating in a professional environment)
Interns will be able to complete a combination of in-person and online work that will take 10 hours per week through the semester. Librarians will provide readings, meet with the intern in-person and online, provide opportunities to interview other librarians at CSUSM, provide job shadowing opportunities, and work with the intern on a semester-long project.
