Community Engagement Partnership with Art EducatorsAt — Fairfax High School - LAUSD

Opportunity Summary

The students who are enrolled in Art 496ACS: Art Education in Schools, Museums, and Community Organizations are interested in gaining art education experience in various settings: local art classrooms, art museum education departments, or local community arts organizations. Students will review our partners (any Art Educators) and select a site where they would like to work during the semester. They will receive 3 units for completing and passing the course. This is an opportunity for students to learn from and assist Art Educators, museum educators, and community arts partners in the fantastic work they do. This is not student teaching and students are not in the credential program.

Opportunity Learning Outcomes

Students will have learned and gained some basic pedagogical knowledge of art education in different environments, including DEI, culturally sustaining teaching practices, community-based art education projects, strategies for looking at and talking about art, and preparing for careers in art education. Students should have met their goals (short-term and long-term) for what they wanted to know about/learn/do in art education. They are expected to share discussion questions and readings with their mentors to understand how the ideas we discuss in our class time are implemented in their site placements. They will reflect on their experiences and present a summary of their experience to the class at the end of the semester. (Mentors will be asked to complete midterm and final evaluations and discuss them with their mentees to help them improve and reflect on their experiences from the semester.

Opportunity Training

Students will be trained in analyzing their curriculum ideas/lesson plans and hands-on projects, problem-solving any issues in the studio art classroom, learning how to collaborate with their mentor and possibly mentor's colleagues (efficient in teamwork and communication), observing mentor teaching and providing constructive feedback to students during class time, and getting the idea of possibly planning and organizing school/student art events outside of the classroom ON site.
