Opportunity Summary 

CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods is a nonprofit organization located in the Northern Region of Orange County, targeting low- income children and families in in the city of Fullerton. CSUF Center for Healthy Neighborhoods’ mission is to join community residents and other stakeholders to alleviate education and health disparities, revitalize neighborhoods, and reduce the cycle of poverty for low-income children and families. 

The Academic Success Program Tutor will play an integral role in the Academic Success Program’s efforts to provide academic resources and support to children in K-12th grades. Under the supervision of the Program Coordinator, the intern will be trained on how to identify resources for students and as well as how to maintain an updated report on students. Interns will also be encouraged to partake in community outreach events to increase familiarity with the community and their needs.

Student Intern(s) will:

·       Identify educational resources that fit the academic needs of the tutee.

·       Build and support effective relationships and Establish a rapport with the tutee and tutee’s parent or legal guardian.

·       Be mentee-focused-develop relationships around the tutee’s specific learning and personal goals.

·       Collaborate with other interns to provide support to the tutee.

·       Monitor the tutee’s progress throughout the program.

·       Participate in community events to increase familiarity with the community.

·       Develop a curriculum to host a weekly program based on art, science, math, or reading.

·       Familiarity with electronic resources provided to tutees at the appropriate grade level.

Student intern(s) may also work on other assigned tasks not specifically listed above. Some weekend opportunities for hours will be available for special events. Student Intern(s) interested in the position must be motivated, have patience, and be willing to work with children.

Alongside with program coordinator and literacy expert, student Intern(s) will:
• Work directly with the underserved and vulnerable Spanish population;
• Work one-on-one with students to provide additional guidance on areas of difficulty;
• Interact with parents/guardians to provide progress updates at the end of each tutoring session;
• Collaborate with other tutors/interns to help facilitate the learning process of students;
• Develop and facilitate educational and enrichment activities and/or events, such as health promotion program, fieldtrips to a college campus, and/or family events;
• Represent the Center and the University in a respectful and professional manner.

On occasions, student intern(s) may also work on other assigned tasks not specifically listed above. Some weekends opportunities for hours will be available for special events. Student Intern(s) interested in the position must be motivated, have patience, and be willing to work with children.

Training;

Training begins the first few weeks of the semester. All interns will be trained on Center policies and procedures, best practices for academic tutoring children and youth, and resilience and self-regulation training. Mandatory group training prior to start of ASP consisting of:

  •  learning/understanding needs of community and people served
  •  effective ways of communicating w/children & families
  •  effective notetaking techniques

Learning Outcomes:

• Develop critical thinking skills to identify and connect the tutee’s individual needs and challenges.
• Facilitate reflective discussion by asking thought-provoking questions, open-ended questions that support the tutee’s learning.
• Demonstrate an inclusive and culturally diverse learning environment.
• Apply educational and learning concepts to address the tutee and parental support

This site is situated in an area where an increasing number of people experiencing homelessness are residing. Steps are being taken at this time to mitigate any concerns and risks that this situation presents.
