The Department of Psychiatry internship placement offers MSW Externs an opportunity to gain direct patient care experience in a unique outpatient psychiatry clinic. Extern will work within a multidisciplinary team both internal to the psychiatry clinic and across the health system. Extern will train to provide comprehensive services to a diverse patient population across the lifespan who are grappling with severe and complex mental health diagnoses. Opportunities to provide clinical case management, psychosocial assessments, short term solution focused interventions, and crisis assessment and supports.
The scope and services provided within the Department of Psychiatry. Develop clinical skills to conduct thorough biopsychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, and clinical case management in a behavioral health clinic. Triage tasks by urgency and acuity, utilize clinic supports appropriately, and effectively manage changing priorities and deadlines. Understand mandated reporter responsibilities for APS and CPS, 5150 criteria, Tarasoff reporting, appropriate use of welfare checks, and HIPAA guidelines. Understand the UC Davis health care system and be able to advocate for patients in collaboration with multiple providers Learn community-based resources. Understand appropriate usage of the electronic medical record and will adhere to strict confidentiality guidelines when accessing sensitive client information
Clinical Skills: • Conduct thorough psychosocial assessments to identify clients' needs and strengths. • Provide supportive counseling utilizing a short-term solution focused model to patients with various psychiatric diagnoses. • Conduct safety assessments and crisis intervention Case Management: • Coordinate services with other healthcare providers and community resources • Assist clients in accessing necessary resources and benefits • Complete resource linkage and patient supports in a timely manner due to competing needs of the social work role within the clinic. • Work effectively within an interdisciplinary team, including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychiatric nurse practitioners, MAs, administrative staff, peer professionals, and other mental health providers. • Contribute to team meetings and case conference • Understand the roles and responsibilities of various team members
The MSW extern will be expected to follow UC Davis Health System's current COVID-19 protocols, including the use of PPE such as masks and a face shield when required, which are available on-site. The MSW extern will encounter clients who are experiencing significant emotional distress or trauma, which can be emotionally demanding or stressful. Complex ethical dilemmas may arise in clinical practice, requiring careful consideration and decision-making as well as consultation.
