Keep Carmel Beautiful - Litter & Graffiti ReductionAt — Carmel Cares

Opportunity Summary

Keep Carmel Beautiful (KCB) is a Community Engagement program that was created as Carmel Cares’ affiliation with KAB. It will encompass all of our efforts to make Carmel litter-free and improve the efficiency of Carmel’s recycling efforts. We will be working towards becoming a certified KAB affiliate by following their process, getting educated, completing yearly litter surveys, and following their guidelines for corporate governance.

A KCB Advisory Board has been established. This includes residents, business representatives from all business types, and eventually Chamber of Commerce, waste management partners, and City government. Together, they will make decisions on how to best apply Keep America Beautiful processes in Carmel-by-the-Sea, conduct surveys, and communicate with constituents regarding how they can assist in those efforts.

The Pick Up Posse & the Tag Team is part of Carmel Cares' Keep Carmel Beautiful program.

Why Join the Pick-up Posse?

  • First, it’s fun to be part of a group with similar interests.  You’ll get a T-shirt to identify you as a member of our team.
  • Second, we will provide you with tools like a trash picker device, branded Pick Up Posse blue bucket, and business cards.
  • The Pick Up Posse has become a social organization of sorts and they meet at local restaurants on a regular basis for a great time!
  • We want to track the time invested in this activity across the team so we will be better able to receive grants to help finance environmental projects.

Tag Team Graffiti Removal

You would think that in a town like Carmel-by-the-Sea there would be little to no graffiti.  We used to think so but once our eyes were open we started seeing graffiti all over the Village.  It came in four types: Paint-based, stickers, charcoal, and carvings in the sandstone on Carmel Beach.  Volunteers had developed some skills in graffiti removal techniques and they acquired the tools and products required to remove graffiti.  So, now we recruit volunteers and get to work!

After a report has been made, the Carmel Cares' Tag Team will attempt to remedy the situation within 24 hours.  We also report the incident to the Carmel Police Department so they can produce appropriate reports to support their investigations.  Carmel Cares also tracks all incidents in a spreadsheet.
