Brea's Art in Public Places ProgramAt — Brea Museum & Historical Society
The City of Brea's Art in Public Places (APP) program, established in 1975, has cultivated a collection of over 190 sculptures by renowned artists, enhancing the city's cultural landscape. To further engage the community and document this rich artistic heritage, we propose the establishment of the Art in Public Places Internship Program. This initiative aims to involve interns in the comprehensive documentation and promotion of Brea's public art collection and its historic value to the community.
Tasks:
• Conduct research on individual artworks and artists within the APP collection.
• Conduct research on the developers who installed art within their building projects.
• Photograph and catalog each sculpture, noting its location and condition.
• Assist in updating and enhancing the existing interactive map of the APP collection.
• Develop content for social media and the Museum’s website to promote the public art program.
• Coordinate and lead public tours or educational workshops related to the APP program.
Training:
Interns will receive training on Brea's more than 100 year history to provide contextual understanding of the Art in Public Places Program.
Interns will meet once a week to engage with a Museum Mentor.
Interns will be instructed on locating research sources within the Museum's collection and offsite.
Learning Outcome:
1. Documentation: Create detailed records of each sculpture, including artist information, historical context, developer information, installation date and current condition.
2. Digital Archiving: Develop and maintain a digital database and interactive map showcasing the APP collection for public access.
3. Community Engagement: Organize educational programs and tours to raise public awareness and appreciation of Brea's public art.
