Opportunity Summary 

Students will engage in an active museum exhibition and community cultural center project development effort to promote the history and cultural traditions of Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley in particular. Past community service learning efforts have engaged the digitization of 19th through 20th-century historical photographs and documents, the rehabilitation of a 1930s Depression-era farmworkers bunkhouse, the configuration of a digital reproduction lab, the renovation of a late 19th-century Victorian historic house museum, the drafting of a National Endowment for the Humanities exhibitions grant, and the planting of heritage plants, among other activities.

Opportunity Training 

Students will be assigned and supervised in all aspects of the SL opportunity or opportunities delegated. Training will be basic but supervised, and quality checks will be conducted on an ongoing basis.

Opportunity Supervision

While Professor Mendoza, the MCHS Vice President, will work alongside most students, some projects will be supervised by James Perry, MCHS Executive Director, or Robert Baillie, MCHS President. The Boronda Adobe History Center Office will be available actively for any support services that might be required.

Additional risk specific to this opportunity 

Students may work to paint wooden shingles or assist with the hand trenching of two areas for the fabrication of footings for a porch. Other help may require moving artifact boxes and materials.
